Attendance

Attendance is an important part of your child’s educational performance. Attending school is both necessary and the law. Because any student who is absent from school for all or any part of the day without a legitimate excuse is considered truant, Vestaburg Community Schools has established the following guidelines in cooperation with the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District:

1. After three (3) unexcused absences, parents will be notified by letter and receipt of the MAISD Truancy flyer.

2. After five (5) unexcused absences, parents will receive a phone call to let them know that the next step will be a referral to the Montcalm Area Intermediate School District and a meeting with the Truancy Officer will be scheduled.

3. After eight (8) unexcused absences, the matter will be referred to the Montcalm County Prosecutor's Office.

Due to the current pandemic and new state guidelines attendance looks very different this year. The school explicitly stated the following expectations for our students that choose distance or virtual learning. These expectations included the following:

  • Two communications per week between the student (or parent if the student is unable) and teacher, that would be teacher initiated.

  • Distance Learning student attends in-person learning, when building is open

  • Student engages with their distance/virtual learning expectations such as watching videos, completing assignments, etc.

The Michigan Department of Education has determined the following guidelines for weekly 2-way communication (5 school days):

  • Zero Two-Way Interactions = Zero Days Attended

  • 1 Two-Way Interaction = Three Days Attended

  • 2 Two-Way Interactions = Five Days Attended

Please feel free to contact the Vestaburg Elementary School administration with any questions or concerns regarding attendance.
